Et tu, Zuckerberg?
As of Tuesday, February 23rd, Urban Yukon’s domain name will retire. After that, you’ll likely instead find an advertisement urging you to buy urbanyukon.com, and quite possibly some sort of protein formula as well.
It’s been a good run–nearly a full decade, which in Internet time is, like, almost 10 years!
And in all that time, hardly anyone asked about the peculiar “urban” part of the name. Who knew that it was a reference to a fourteenth century pope all along?
I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly.
The sun has gone to bed and so must I.
Yes, it’s true. Urban Yukon will retire in early 2016, when its domain registration expires.
Blogging doesn’t seem to be as popular what with all of the social media options out there. For example, Urban Yukon had no new members for the entire year of 2014. And as of a couple of years ago, the RSS feed service that Urban Yukon uses started charging $100 per year to maintain the feeds. Not a huge extravagance, but with fewer members and fewer posts, it doesn’t seem worth it anymore. Because of that cost, I won’t be accepting any more new members.
If anyone should want to take over and keep the flame burning, just let me know. Or, if you’d like dibs on the urbanyukon.com name, I can arrange for you to take it over just before it expires next year.
Thanks to you all for blogging all these years, and I hope most of you that are still active will keep it up. Blogs are still the best way to learn about life in the Yukon and even how to be a more skookum Yukoner. And special thanks to Geof Harries for launching Urban Yukon in the first place.
